Move over Slinky, the giant starfish is here – EV architectural splendour

21 Jun

each day around two in the afternoon I receive an alert with news from that mystical ether known as the interweb about what’s happening with Eurovision 2012. Nothing delights my ears more (other than the winning AZ entry) than the dainty ‘ping’ that lets me know what’s new in the magical parallel universe of Eurovision 2012.

I am delighted to say that the best and most talented minds in AZ architecture have gathered together to create some designs to make that German slinky become a German slunky. I’m pleased to report that said creative minds are paying tribute to their seaside location and have designed a giant starfish ]

I particularly like the disco effect along the side, like you’ve plugged in a night light to keep the kiddies from getting scared.

It is also somewhat reminiscent of a casino chip – well, at least the one’s I’ve seen in the James Bond films. Perhaps a homage to Lady Luck and her role in winning Eurovision? (assuming Lady Luck is located in any one of the former Soviet states and can SMS like a 16 year old girl on Red Bull)

Of course, if this magnificent structure is built we EV 2012 visitors will have to be able to find it. Simple no? Well, it will be by May next year but right now if you were to try and find anything in Baku let alone the rest of AZ you may find yourself wandering ‘lost and forgotten’ ( sorry – that dirge has made a surprise appearance)

But fear not, Azta (the AZ tourism assoc) is on the job and has cartographers trawling the ancient streets and laneways of Baku to identify all the ‘best’ hotels, restaurants and shops. To be the best, they must meet ‘modern requirements’ – not entirely sure what this means, but I hope it doesn’t limit the list to 7/11s and chain hotels.

There’s also been some speculation on how AZ will pay for this extravaganza. They’re a net exporter of energy so should be rolling in it right? Well, right for some and wrong for others. The AZ govt has taken a fairly strong stance on how the many citizens will contribute, not just through their love and support of Eldar and Nigar but through a 20% tax on their pay

I guess you can respect the direct approach no mumblings and false hope about schools, roads and hospitals, who needs them when you can have a giant disco starfish? Just so long as you’re not sucking on one of those evil Armenian apricot stones while you gaze.
